80% of HDB shopkeepers intend to continue businesses: survey

SINGAPORE: HDB shopkeepers are overall largely very positive about their businesses.

In the latest Business Expectations Survey, eight in 10 said they intend to continue their businesses over the next five years.

The board said this is the highest rating it has seen since a survey done in 2007.

In his latest blog entry, Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan said the survey showed that more than 95 per cent of medical or dental clinics intend to continue with their businesses.

Seventy-five per cent of shops dealing in fashion and apparel intend to do so.

The survey also showed that satisfaction with business differs from towns.

Mature towns showed the highest satisfaction rate (55%), followed by middle-aged towns (54%) and young towns (49%).

Eating establishments topped the charts in terms of daily patronage, followed by childcare and education centres.

Optical shops had the lowest daily patronage.

Mr Khaw said shopkeepers know what to do to continue to enjoy good business.

One strategy is to be proactive in reaching out to customers.

They have to be creative and flexible in their business models, and offer new and innovative products and services.
