World's smallest house is one sq m

Berlin-based architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel has designed what could be the smallest house in the world at just one sq m (pictured).

Called the One-Sqm-House, Le-Mentzel has described it as a place where “no one other than I, myself, can decide what happens with this one square metre of mine in the world”.

“It's the only square metre in the world where I can decide what direction the window looks in, what direction the door opens in, what neighbours I have,” he said.

Ever since Le-Mentzel left his homeland of Laos as a refugee, he has been exploring the concept of housing.

With the help of BMW Guggenheim Lab, the architect/furniture designer developed the tiny house which he plans to share with the world.

Le-Mentzel has also invited Berliners to build as many one sq m houses as possible. At the same time, the Lab has offered to cover the cost of materials for those who cannot afford it, provided they allow the Lab to rent out the spaces till the end of this month.

Meanwhile, the One-Sqm-House has been listed on short-term rentals website Airbnb for €1 (S$1.52) a night.
