SGX April securities market activity declines

SINGAPORE: Securities market activity in the Singapore Exchange (SGX) continued to decline in April.

Data from SGX showed securities turnover dropped 27 per cent on-year to S$23.5 billion.

Daily average value was also down by 27 per cent on-year to S$1.2 billion, and 10 per cent lower compared with March 2012.



SGX said Catalist turnover was S$998 million in April, up by six times compared to 2011, and a rise of 61 per cent on-month.

SGX's total market capitalisation dropped from S$870.9 billion in March to about S$861.3 billion in April.

Meanwhile, trading in the derivatives market continued to grow last month.

SGX said derivatives volume rose 29 per cent year-on-year to 6.3 million contracts, while daily average volume grew 28 per cent to 322,213 contracts.

But the daily average volume was down nine per cent on-month in April.

In terms of commodity contracts, SGX said the volume of contracts cleared increased by 40 per cent on-year to 13,974 contracts.
