Toshiba debuts smart TV platform for Asia

Toshiba has finally introduced a smart TV platform for its TVs retailing in Asia. Better known as "Toshiba Places", users can expect to access apps categorized into the following five key genres. Video Place: Video-on-demand (VOD) and online video-streaming services such as YouTube.Music Place: Think Internet radio stations for starters.Social Place: Twitter and Facebook are two highlights.News Place: Offers up-to-date news in sports, and etc.Game Place: Promises games for both casual and serious gamers.
Still, unlike the competing smart TV platforms from LG, Samsung and Sony, there's no app store, Web browser or remote apps for mobile devices. While Toshiba Places may not be as "polished" as its rivals, it is definitely a step forward in the right direction for the Japanese company.

Toshiba Places will be featured in the upcoming VL20-series Regza 3D TVs launching in Asia around May. More models with this function are in the pipeline, too.
