SMRT issues statement on stalled train

SINGAPORE: SMRT has said an eastbound train at Paya Lebar MRT Station was unable to depart from the station at 3.15pm Sunday.

As a result, passengers were asked to alight at the station.

SMRT said a second train behind the stalled train was called to push out the train.

Some passengers in the second train could have experienced some jerking during the train coupling process.

The train operator added that eastbound train service from Eunos to Paya Lebar resumed at around 4pm.

One hotline caller told Channel NewsAsia he was at Paya Lebar station waiting to get onto the train to the Singapore Expo when service stopped.

He said he was waiting at the platform when he heard the train behind bump into the stationary train.

He later realised the operator was probably using the force to push the train, "but it made a huge sound".

Some 500 passengers at Paya Lebar station were affected during the incident.?
