Singapore stocks close mixed

SINGAPORE : Stocks in Singapore ended mixed on Friday amid pessimism over weak US economic data.

In the United States, data showed that new claims for unemployment benefits only inched lower last week, as several weeks of confidence-building falls appear to be coming to an end. The Labor Department also said that the number of people claiming in the previous week was higher than previously reported.

The Straits Times Index fell 0.46 per cent or 13.73 points to close at 2,994.48.

Volume was 4.21 billion shares.

In the broader market, however, gainers led losers 235 to 160.

HLH Group climbed 14.3 per cent to S$0.03, while Keppel Corp fell 1.4 per cent to S$11.39.
