Schools urged to set up school-based student care centres

SINGAPORE : The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports is encouraging more schools to set up school-based student care centres.

This is to offer greater support to students, who can access student care services within the school after lessons end.

The ministry provides development grants to set up such centres operated by Voluntary Welfare Organisations.

Schools experiencing space constraints can also approach the ministry for funding, for developing pre-fabricated modular structures to house the centres.

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Halimah Yacob, said this at the official opening of the AMP-Mercu Centre at Fuhua Primary School on Tuesday.

She said: "School-based, student care centres play a very important role. And the reason why they are important is because they provide the continuity of care and support for the children, particularly children (who have)...nobody at home, after they are discharged from school."
